  • Fact Check: NOT north California blizzard — this is from China! Old visuals of an avalanche in China were falsely shared as the aftermath of the recent North California blizzard. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While there was a blizzard attack in North California, this image dates back to January 2023 and shows the aftermath of an avalanche in China's Xizang (Tibet) region. Northern California in the United States was hit by a snowstorm over the weekend. Reportedly, this was the biggest snowstorm of the season (with more snow on the way) and interstate highways remained closed because of the blizzard even on March 4. Now, images of cars buried in heavy snow with passengers inside are circulating on social media, with captions like, "Snowpocalypse in Northern California buries motorists." Many also shared a video of the same incident with similar claims. India Today Fact Check found that the visuals are more than a year old and from China. Revealing the truth beneath the snow A reverse image search of the viral photo led us to an X post shared on January 19, 2023. This post featured the viral image but stated that this was an avalanche that occurred on January 17, 2023, in Linzhi to Pai, China. The post mentioned that an accident occurred at the exit of the Duoxiongla Tunnel, resulting in eight deaths. This clarified that the images of cars buried under snow are unrelated to the recent North California blizzard. An advanced search using keywords led us to a Chinese news report dated January 19, 2023, featuring several other images from the incident. According to the report, locals refer to the area where the accident occurred as "Ghost Gate" due to numerous avalanches over the years resulting in casualties. Global Times, China's state-owned news outlet, covered the incident on January 20, 2023. According to the report, a total of 28 people were killed after being trapped in the snow in China's Xizang (Tibet) region. Thus, it is clear that an old and unrelated image was falsely shared as visuals of Northern California’s blizzards.
