The viral video shows lawyers struggling to serve themselves during a dinner following a bar council election in Pakistan in 2020.
The Pakistani cricket team suffered its most crushing defeat in One Day Internationals against the Indian squad during the Asia Cup Super 4 clash in Sri Lanka. Now, a video that’s being widely shared online claims to show the Pakistani team’s demeanour before the match.
The video shows various people fighting over a buffet. Allegedly, among the people engaging in the food-related dispute before the fated match was the Pakistani squad. Other posts claimed that this incident occurred during the team's last dinner in Sri Lanka after their disqualification from the series.
One Twitter user, sharing the viral video, quipped, "Entire Pakistani cricket team and staff before the match today." The archived version of one such post can be seen here.
India Today found that contrary to claims, the viral video does not feature the Pakistani cricket team. The video has been circulating on the internet since October 2020 and shows lawyers struggling to serve themselves during a dinner following bar elections in Pakistan.
OUR PROBE
Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to multiple posts dating back to October 2020. All the posts made during that year affirmed its connection to the Lahore Bar Council election dinner.
A Twitter user, whose bio states he’s a lawyer, shared the video back in 2020 and wrote, "Lahore bar election gathering zindabad... let's slap each other to get first dibs on the meat - let's keep our facemasks off whilst we push and shove and let's show the next generation of lawyers what lies ahead for their time."
The dates on which the viral video surfaced on social media also coincide with the Punjab Bar Council election schedule, as can be seen below.
Notably, there was an absence of recognisable faces from the Pakistan cricket team in the video. Add to that, many people in the video appeared to be clad in white shirts and black coats and ties, an attire commonly associated with advocates.
So, while we were unable to independently verify whether the video was from the Lahore Bar elections, or from a different bar election in Pakistan, it’s more than clear it has nothing to do with the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023.
