Both persons in the video were students. The assailant was later charged with assault.
A viral video of school bullying has emerged and outraged many social media users. In the video, a woman can be seen hitting a child, pulling her hair, and ultimately knocking her down. While the faces of both persons were blurred, people claimed that a Black teacher assaulted a White student in the US.
Calling for racial segregation, many who shared the clip claimed that the assailant was a black teacher and that she thrashed the child for no reason. One such tweet read, “American Public Schools have just become a place where radicalised Black teachers (pumped full of CRT rage) can take out their unfettered anger on little White children with no consequences.” The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.
India Today found that the woman who is seen hitting that child in the viral video wasn’t a teacher but a fellow student at the school studying in the same grade.
Our Probe
A reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to several media reports from February 2022, containing screenshots from the video. NBC News affiliate WSAV3 News reported on February 17, 2022, reported that both the assailant and the victim were sixth graders of Lady’s Island Middle School in Beaufort, South Carolina, in the US.
Citing the Beaufort Police Department, the report stated that the two children got into a physical altercation in the girls’ locker room, while another student recorded the encounter and shared it on Snapchat. The physical fight came after a day of a verbal spat between the two in which they called each other slow walkers.
The father of the assaulted student reportedly pressed charges against the other child for assault and battery. USACrime, a crime news portal, stated that the case was being probed and the child assailant would be charged in a family court.
We also found a statement released by the school principal following the incident. While apprising the parents of the harrowing incident, she told them that law enforcement was investigating the case.
None of the reports suggest that the assailant was a teacher at the school. Thus, it’s clear that the viral claim was false.
