  • Last Updated on October 15, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A viral social media post claimed to be shared by Nadine Dorris, U.K. secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, suggests people use dogs or cats to stay warm in the winter. We fact-checked and found the claim is False. The Claim A Twitter post manipulated to imitate a screenshot of a tweet shared by Nadine Dorris is circulating on social media. One post has got 828 retweets, 436 quote tweets and 3,855 likes till we last checked. Fact Check Did the U.K. cultural secretary say we should use cats and dogs to stay warm? It does not seem so. No evidence confirms Nadine Dorris has shared the Tweet. We could not find a record of such a post on Dorris’s account (twitter.com/NadineDorries). Also, no evidence shows that the thread is now-deleted. We searched online to understand the reason behind such a misleading post spreading disinformation on social media. It seems the false news is circulating on social media as energy bills in the U.K. skyrocket. Dorris’s office has confirmed to the Associated Press that the tweet is fake. In the realm of social media, statements from public figures can spark widespread debate, similar to claims made by leaders on health and nutrition. For instance, PM Modi’s assertion about singing bhajans potentially addressing malnutrition raises questions about the efficacy of such statements.
