These videos are old and have nothing to do with this incident.
After the Lucknow Super Giants’ defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the current season of the Indian Premier League on May 8, a video allegedly showing the former’s owner Sanjiv Goenka publicly scolding team captain KL Rahul went viral.
As social media debated and dissected this video, two other videos purporting to show the owner now apologising to the captain cropped up. But do these videos actually show that? Let’s look at them one at a time.
THE FIRST VIDEO
One video shows Sanjiv Goenka saying, “All the fans, to the players, to the coach, and the entire coaching staff,” before the video switches to a voiceover that says he apologised to KL Rahul and others. The video was shared with claims like, “Sanjiv Goenka apologises to KL Rahul and the supporting staff of Lucknow Super Giants !! Great Gesture.” Its archive can be seen here.
Using a keyword search, we found that this video was first shared on the official X account of the Mohun Bagan Super Giant football club on April 15. Goenka is the chairman of this club. In the video, Goenka can be heard saying that it was a historic day as Mohun Bagan had won the league trophy for the first time.
According to the official website of the Indian Super League, Mohun Bagan defeated the Mumbai City Football Club to win its first ever League shield on April 15. Thus, it’s clear that this video has nothing to do with KL Rahul.
THE SECOND VIDEO
In the second video, Goenka can be heard saying, “Anyone who knows the stand, that we are going to play to win. So, you will see an approach of wanting to win in any game. Believe in us, back us, we won’t disappoint you.” Its archive can be seen here.
We found that this clip was first shared by Sanjiv Goenka’s official Instagram account on December 19, 2023, the day when the 2024 Indian Premier League actions were held in Dubai. The video was shared with hashtags like “#LucknowSuperGiants” and “#IPLAuction”.
Thus, it’s clear that this video too is unrelated.
GOENKA AND KL RAHUL
As per a Times of India report Sanjiv Goenka hosted KL Rahul for dinner on May 13 and a picture of him hugging Rahul on the occasion was widely shared. However, we did not find any video of Goenka apologising to Rahul.
