| - In November 2024, rumors that retired comedian Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved from the U.S. to the U.K. because of President-elect Donald Trump's reelection spread across multiple platforms, garnering millions of views.
Several media outlets, including Vanity Fair and Fox News, pointed to a report published by The Wrap on Nov. 20, 2024. According to "a person close to the former TV host" — who was not named — DeGeneres and de Rossi "moved to rural England, put their Montecito estate on the market and plan to never return to the United States, telling friends the election of Donald Trump was their primary motivation," The Wrap reported.
As of this writing, we have not been able to independently verify these claims. We reached out to DeGeneres' representative and will update this story if we receive a response.
Beyond Trump's winning the 2024 election, people have made a variety of claims regarding the reasons for the alleged move, including unsubstantiated connections with rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Other reports, including from TMZ, claimed that DeGeneres and de Rossi bought a home in the U.K. before the election.
Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Ellen and Portia have settled in a new home in the Cotswolds -- a region in South West England, about 2 hours from London.
We're told the couple scooped up the place before the election … but were "very disillusioned" with Trump's victory … and, as one source put it, they immediately decided "to get the hell out."
Fox News also claimed the couple sold their home in California in August 2024.
A pub in Burford, England — a small town on the edge of the Cotswolds region — posted a video (archived) on its Instagram page on Nov. 13, 2024, that appears to show DeGeneres and de Rossi waving to the camera. We have not independently confirmed whether it is the couple in the video, nor do we know who recorded the footage.
In sum, Snopes has not yet independently verified claims that DeGeneres and de Rossi have moved to the U.K. We also have not independently verified whether the reason for allegedly moving was Trump's reelection. Therefore, we rate this claim as a research in progress.
