  • As the 2024 U.S. presidential election steamed ahead, the ever-persistent "body double" rumors made a comeback. A bizarre claim went viral after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, were pictured after casting their votes in Palm Beach, Florida. Posts on X claimed the woman standing next to Trump was not his wife, but a body double. (X user @JeffFromNJ) The above rumor is obviously false. There is no evidence of a "fake Melania" standing next to Trump as they spoke to the media. Video footage of them walking out from the polling station and press photographs from that moment identify the woman next to Trump as his wife. C-SPAN footage shows Trump walking out from the polling station, Melania next to him. They then stand in front of reporters, where Trump answers questions. Melania can be seen standing quietly next to Trump at the 2:54 mark. At the 10:58 mark she smiles and nods as Trump talked about his Secret Service security. She did not speak during that time. Getty Images also had photographs from that moment, and a close-up shows the woman next to Trump was clearly Melania. The caption stated: "Melania Trump meets with reporters after casting her vote at the polling place in the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center on Election Day, on November 05, 2024 in Palm Beach, Florida." (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) According to The New York Times, Melania also was asked a question, but she did not respond: "As the Trumps left, Melania Trump was asked whether she voted for her husband. She smirked at the question and chuckled a bit, without answering." The rumors of her being a body double are outlandish, particularly because these images were captured right after they voted. In-person voters in Florida bring identification, or sign an affidavit of identity, or vote on a provisional ballot if they don't have identification. Anyone pretending to be Melania at the polling station would be in violation of election rules. We've seen persistent conspiracy theories of a Melania body double during past election cycles and during the Trump administration. Even U.S. President Joe Biden has fallen victim to this claim. Our past coverage of the "body double" conspiracy theory can be found here.
