India Today Fact Check
This is a picture of a tomb in Egypt, where a wall painting of a priest, dating back over 4,300 years, was discovered. This painting of the priest has no relation with Hinduism whatsoever.
The great pyramids of Egypt are considered as one of the most architecturally mystifying constructions on the earth, considering the period they were erected. Now and then, rumours about pyramids and myths associated with them keep stealing the spotlight. The latest one to spread like a wildfire on social media claims that a Hindu temple was found under one of these pyramids.
An Instagram user shared a picture of an excavated site and wrote, "A Hindu Ancient temple was found under the pyramids, Egypt. There is a Hindu temple under the pyramids. Pyramids are built on the temple. There are many doors of Hindu temples under the pyramids. They are covered by the pyramids.....As many Shiva Lingas are underground, many Hindu temples are still underground. Total world is Sanatana. Sanatana dharma."
In the picture, a pyramid can also be seen in the background.

To get to the bottom of the truth, we conducted a reverse image search. It led us to a few media reports that contained the viral image.
According to Livescience, a portal that catalogues developments in science, space, technology and history, the viral photo was clicked by Maksim Lebedev, faculty member at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of History of the East. He led a team of researchers that discovered the wall painting, dating back over 4,300 years.
The painting was discovered in 2012 by a team from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has been excavating these tombs since 1996.
Per the report, the painting shows vivid scenes of life, including boats sailing south on the Nile river, a bird hunting trip in a marsh and a man named Perseneb who's shown with his wife and dog. The painting was discovered when the researchers began the restoration process of the tomb of Perseneb, who was a “priest” and “steward”.
A report by nbcnews states that tomb, located 1,000 feet (300 meters) east of the Great Pyramid of Giza, contains an offering room, central room and burial chamber.
The tomb is believed to date to the middle or late fifth dynasty (ca. 2450-2350 B.C.).
Livescience quoted Lebedev, “The "The full agricultural sequence relating to crops represents the most crucial event in the life of ancient Egyptian society.”
Remarkably, religious places of ancient Egypt civilisation are so called temples and the religious figure who performed ceremonies are called priest.
We then reached out to Lebedev for his comments. The report will be updated as and when the response is received.
Thus, an old discovery of a wall painting of a priest–that lived in an ancient Egypt society–in a tomb in Egypt was presented with a fabricated claim that a Hindu temple was discovered under a pyramid.
