This video has been on the Internet since 2020. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video has nothing to do with the recent Israel-Hamas conflict. This video dates back to 2020 when anti-lockdown protesters clashed with the police in Barcelona. Protests broke out in many cities across the world after a deadly air strike on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in central Gaza claimed hundreds of Palestinian lives. A video going viral purports to show one such protest in Barcelona, Spain. It shows violent clashes between protesters and the police. Sharing the video, a Twitter user wrote, “Clashes between pro-Palestinian protesters and police in Barcelona, Spain”. Other similar claims can be seen here. The archived version of such tweets can be seen here and here. India Today found that the viral video has nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas conflict. This video dates back to 2020 when anti-lockdown protesters clashed with the police in Barcelona. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a tweet from November 5, 2020, containing the same clip. It read, “EU adopted refugees post Syrian unrest. France, and others warned of consequences, didn’t pay heed. A grateful ISIS Pakistan Army & dreaded ISI-led Jihadis repaid the good gesture by killing innocents. Congress MLA incited mobs. Wake-up call Emmanuel Macron, Narendra Modi, Zero Tolerance?” This proved that the video predated the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict by at least three years. We searched on the internet to find out whether any clashes erupted around this time in Europe. We found a report in the Daily Mail, which contained the viral video. As per the report, this video was from the violent clashes between anti-lockdown protesters and the police over Covid-19 restrictions in Barcelona, Spain. We performed a keyword search and found that violent clashes erupted in Spain when new restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19 were announced by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. In fact, Sanchez even called for an end to what he dubbed “violent and irrational behaviour” against the government’s decision to declare a six-month state of emergency in response to the pandemic. It’s noteworthy that according to recent reports, hundreds of people marched through Barcelona to express their support for the Palestinian people affected during the ongoing conflict. But no such news of violent clashes between Pro-Palestine protesters have been reported in the European Union since the conflict began on October 7. To sum it up, an old video of anti-lockdown protesters clashing with the police in Barcelona was falsely shared in the context of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
