  • Last Updated on June 17, 2024 by Neelam Singh Quick Take In a video on social media, a voiceover suggests that consuming celery juice can help relieve pain from gout and arthritis. We fact checked and found the claim to be Half true. The Claim A facebook reel by the name Rommel Ramirez posted a video where a voice over is saying that drinking celery juice will help relieve pain from gout and arthritis. Fact Check What is gout? Gout is a type of arthritis that causes severe attacks of pain, redness, and swelling in the joints, often the big toe. It is caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints due to high levels of uric acid in the blood. Risk factors include a diet rich in red meat and seafood, obesity, certain medications, and genetic predisposition. Gout attacks can be extremely painful and may become chronic if untreated, leading to joint damage. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce pain and inflammation, as well as lifestyle changes to manage uric acid levels. What is arthritis? Arthritis is a general term for inflammation of the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced movement. Arthritis can affect people of all ages and can range from mild to severe. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and improving joint function, typically through medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. What causes pain in gout and arthritis ? Pain in gout is caused by uric acid crystals accumulating in joints, triggering intense inflammation. This attracts white blood cells, releases inflammatory mediators, and leads to swelling and pressure, resulting in severe pain. In osteoarthritis, pain arises from cartilage breakdown, causing bones to rub together, develop bone spurs, and increase joint friction. Inflammation adds to pain and stiffness. In rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune response attacks the synovium, causing inflammation, thickening, and destruction of cartilage and bone. Pannus formation invades joints, leading to pain and deformity. Common mechanisms include inflammatory mediators, nerve compression, and muscle spasms. Does drinking celery juice help in the management of gout and arthritis pain? Drinking celery juice especially celery seeds may help manage gout and arthritis pain. We found many papers that talk about celery’s role in managing gout and arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Celery contains compounds that can reduce uric acid levels, crucial for gout management, and flavonoids like quercetin, which reduce inflammation. Its antioxidants lower oxidative stress, linked to pain and inflammation in both conditions. Celery juice also hydrates and provides essential nutrients, supporting overall health. While beneficial, it should complement a balanced diet, regular exercise, and medical treatments for effective management of gout and arthritis. Wem asked Harita Adhvaryu, Senior dietician and Diabetes educator, Ahmedabad about the same. She explained, “Celery is not commonly consumed at the ground level in India. However, studies and research papers indicate that celery juice, along with its seeds, can aid in pain management for individuals suffering from gout and arthritis.”
