| - Recently, a video circulated online claiming that “terrorists in Bangladesh are organizing an assembly against Hindus today, and a well-known terrorist named Sheikh Nasir Billah Al Makki has been seen with armed Islamists.”
The posts propagating this claim were shared on X (formerly Twitter) and can be viewed here: Post 1 (Archive) and Post 2 (Archive).
Fact Check
The Rumor Scanner team investigated the claim and found it was not a rally against Hindus. Instead, the event in Sirajganj was organized to welcome Syed Sheikh Nasir Billah Al Makki, introduced as the 43rd descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
During the investigation, a video titled “The Arrival of the 43rd Descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sheikh Nasir Billah Al Makki, in Sirajganj” was found on the Facebook page of DBC News dated December 13. A comparison of a frame from this video with the images in the circulated claims confirmed they were the same.
Upon reviewing the video, it was confirmed that the event was held to welcome Syed Sheikh Nasir Billah Al Makki upon his arrival from Saudi Arabia, and it was not related to any anti-Hindu assembly.
Further investigation found a report published on the website of the national daily Samakal that corroborated these findings.. The report (Archived Link) mentioned that there was criticism regarding an individual seen holding an object resembling a gun at the event. However, Samakal clarified that the object was a toy gun.
According to the report, the incident sparked significant discussion, prompting inquiries from various quarters. Police questioned Naimul, son of Shafiq Mia from Beltal village in Shahjadpur Upazila, and confiscated the toy gun.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahjadpur Police Station, Mohammad Aslam Ali, stated: “We were initially in an awkward situation due to the incident. A large crowd gathered to welcome the 43rd descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A young man was seen standing nearby holding what appeared to be a weapon. The photos shared on social media drew criticism from the local administration and the police. Upon investigation, we confirmed that the object was merely a plastic toy. Naimul Islam, a student of Baghabari Jamia Rashidia Hafizia and Qaumi Madrasa in Shahjadpur, had purchased the toy gun for 220 takas for his 8-year-old sister, Sumaiya, from a temporary shop near the event venue.”
Conclusion
The event in Sirajganj, organized to welcome Syed Sheikh Nasir Billah Al Makki, the 43rd descendant of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), upon his arrival from Saudi Arabia, was falsely portrayed as an anti-Hindu assembly in Bangladesh. This claim has been verified and found to be false.
