  • Fact Check: Old video of a cop beating elderly man in MP falsely linked to Uttar Pradesh In 2022, the elderly man allegedly misbehaved with passengers on the platform under the influence of alcohol, following which he was assaulted by a cop. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The incident occurred at the Jabalpur railway station in Madhya Pradesh in July 2022, not in Uttar Pradesh. A video of a policeman assaulting an elderly man at a railway station has gone viral on social media. Those sharing it claimed that the incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh, questioning the state's law and order situation. In the video, the policeman kicks the elderly man in the face, drags him to the edge of the platform, hangs him upside down, and continuously punches him. A Facebook user shared the video, writing, "Uttar Pradesh is heading towards Jungle Raaj. Just look at how the Police are beating the old man mercilessly. Mob lynching, bulldozing homes of innocent Muslims is common in UP now." An archived version of the video can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the incident occurred in 2022 at the Jabalpur railway station in Madhya Pradesh, not Uttar Pradesh. OUR PROBE We noticed that an X user shared the link to an India Today report under a viral post, highlighting that the incident is from Madhya Pradesh and not Uttar Pradesh. The report stated that the incident occurred in July 2022 at the Jabalpur railway station in Madhya Pradesh. The police constable from Rewa was suspended after the video of him thrashing the old man went viral on social media. According to a report by News18, this happened on July 27, 2022, at platform number 5 of the Jabalpur railway station. The constable was travelling from Jabalpur to Rewa on the day of the incident. The Government Railway Police alleged that Gopal, the elderly man, was misbehaving with passengers on the platform under the influence of alcohol. When the constable tried to stop him, Gopal, in an inebriated state, got into a fight with the constable, triggering the latter to assault Gopal. The constable, identified as Anand, was later suspended for the physical assault. Similar reports of the incident, containing screengrabs from the viral video, can be seen here and here. Thus, it’s clear that the viral video claiming to show a policeman brutally beating an elderly man in Uttar Pradesh is misleading. The incident occurred in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, in 2022.
