  • FACT CHECK: No, Scott Bessent Did Not Make An X Post About ‘Eliminating Income Taxes’ An image shared on Threads purports to show an X post from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in which he claims he’s “committed to eliminating income taxes.” View on Threads Verdict: False The X account that purportedly shared the post has been suspended for violating the platform’s rules as of writing. In addition, Lead Stories debunked the claim. Fact Check: Bessent is the first openly LGBTQ person to hold the position of Treasury Secretary, according to The Hill. Bessent is also the “highest-ranking LGBTQ official in the nation’s history,” the outlet reported. The Threads image purports to show an X post from Bessent in which he claims he’s “committed to eliminating income taxes.” “As Treasury Secretary, I’m committed to eliminating income taxes, replacing them with a fair consumption tax, and adopting a gold-backed currency. We’ll erase debt, restore financial privacy, and unlock new technologies for a prosperous future. The golden age starts now,” the purported post from Bessent reads. According to the same image, Bessent’s X handle is @Scott_Bessent. The claim is false. The X account @Scott_Bessent has been suspended for violating the platform’s rules as of writing. According to X’s official list of rules and policies, accounts can be suspended for a host of reasons, including impersonation. Likewise, a keyword search for Bessent does not generate results for any associated social media profiles, only a Wikipedia page. In addition, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has not recently stated any intent to eliminate income taxes via a press release or social media statement. Check Your Fact also did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 29, Lead Stories debunked the claim. Bessent was confirmed as Treasury Secretary in a 68 to 29 vote, according to Reuters. Check Your Fact has contacted the White House for comment.
