Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video has been digitally altered. It stitches different clips from an interview from 2010. In it, Khan had said that he was a proud Indian. A video of actor Shah Rukh Khan purportedly speaking about Islam, religion, and Pakistan has been making rounds on social media with a shocking claim. People, while sharing the video, claimed Khan referred to himself as a "proud Pakistani" and that he disrespected Hindu gods. In this video, Khan can be heard saying, "... especially in my country where wrongly people feels Islam is a minority. It made me feel very special because of my religion. I am Islamic by birth, so I believe in Allah and his saying. I am very proud to be a Muslim, I am very proud to be of this religion, I am very proud to be a Pakistani." This 14-second clip was shared alongside captions like, "#ShahRukhKhan says, I am proud to be Muslim & Pakistani!" #ShahRukhKhan says,I am proud to be Muslim & Pakistani !! pic.twitter.com/CzdfyhR6bg — ASHWIN (@Akkis_Army) September 17, 2022 An archived version of this video can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found that the viral video was created by altering multiple clips from a 12-year-old interview with Khan. AFWA Probe When we searched for Khan’s interview with quotes from the clip, we found a longer version of the video on the official YouTube channel of Zoom. This February 19, 2010, video is titled, "Shah Rukh, a proud Muslim & Indian." In this almost three-minute-long video, Khan was asked by the interviewer if he had faced discrimination based on his religion. Khan answered, "Despite my religion, I have been accepted all over the world. Especially in my country, where wrongly people feel is a...(pause), people seem to say that Islam is a minority and I think it's an ironic statement to make. Because I have never been made to feel like that. I have been made to feel very special because of my religion here." He further said, "We all need to trust and believe in our religions, whatever religion we belong to. I am Islamic by birth, so I believe in Allah," adding that he was proud to be a Muslim, an Indian. He also said that he read Hindu books and practised Hindu rituals with his wife, Gauri, who is Hindu. What did he say about Pakistan? During this conversation, Khan was asked about a year-old incident at Newark airport in the US, where he was detained and questioned for hours. There, at the 1 minute 39-second time mark of the viral video, he was heard using the word “Pakistani”, which was clipped and used without its proper context to give the statement a false spin. "This was at immigration (counter) and was not at the security (check). The people at immigration were Indians and Pakistanis who knew me. And that point of time, being stalled for a couple of hours was a little irritating because I had to reach somewhere and I was missing that appointment," Khan said in the interview. The word “Pakistani” appears to be taken from this part and added to the section where Khan was talking about how proud he was to be an Indian. Thus, it becomes clear that the viral video was manipulated digitally. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
