  • Fact Check: Fire in Iceland? This volcano video is not recent, it's from 2021 A 2021 video of Iceland's Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption was shared as a recent incident. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows Iceland’s long-dormant Fagradalsfjall volcano spewing lava in March 2021. Residents of Grindavik, an Icelandic town that was evacuated after hundreds of earthquakes jolted the country, were allowed a brief visit home to collect pets and essential belongings on November 12. The tremors have prompted fears of a possible eruption in the country’s southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, as fissures formed on roads of the abandoned town. Amid this, a video of a volcano spewing lava as people flee the area was shared widely on social media. Those sharing the clip claimed that volcanic eruptions have begun in Iceland. A person shared the clip on Facebook, writing, “Here we go, if the UK wasn't grey already it could possibly be covered in an ash cloud. Iceland - Volcano is starting to erupt. Mass evacuations are happening.” An archived version of a similar post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is two years old and does not show a recent eruption in Iceland. Getting to the ‘core’ A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a Reddit post containing the same clip from March 30, 2021. This proved that the video did not show a recent incident. Further, we found several people sharing the same video around the same time. Many of these posts credited “Binni Smari” for the viral video. Using this, we found the viral video shared on March 21, 2021, by a Facebook account that goes by the same name. Per the caption, Smari went to see the volcano the same day and shared several photos from the spot. We also found a news report about Iceland’s long-dormant Fagradalsfjall volcano ejecting lava on March 21, 2021. The report carried a video similar to the one going viral, shared by Reykjavik resident Andri Magnason, who also headed out to see the rare eruption. Further, we could not find any reports about any recent eruptions at the Fagradalsfjall volcano at the time of writing this report. Thus, it is more than clear, that an old video from 2021 was shared as a recent volcanic eruption in Iceland.
