A video of a Dalit youth being assaulted in Gujarat’s Vadodara last year is being shared with the false claim of a Christian youth being mob lynched recently.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A video is going viral on social media with the claim that it is related to the attack on the Christian community in India. It is being claimed that a Christian man was mercilessly thrashed by members of the Hindu community. Vishvas News investigation found this claim to be misleading. The viral video is of an old incident in Gujarat.
Claim:
Sharing the viral video, social media user (archive link) ‘Elizabeth Thapa’ wrote, “Brutal attack on a Christian by a Hindu mob in India, A country where mob lynchings are on the rise.” Several other users have shared the same video with similar and identical claims.
Investigation:
In the viral video, some people can be seen mercilessly thrashing a man. A reverse image search of the keyframes of the viral video led to a report published on December 23, 2022, on the website of The Indian Express, in which screenshots of the video have been used.
The Indian Express news report stated that a Dalit youth was thrashed in Vadodara by seven people. The news report further stated that five people have been apprehended in connection with the incident. “A video had gone viral on social media, in which seven men were seen thrashing a 24-year-old youth, Alpesh Parmar. Taking action in this case, the police also arrested five people,” the news report stated.
Congress party MLA in Gujarat Jignesh Mevani also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi while sharing this video.
A news report published in Divya Bhaskar’s Ahmedabad edition on December 21, 2022, also described the victim as a Dalit.
Many other reports also mention this incident, in which the victim youth has been described as a Dalit. We contacted Jagran Gujarati Deputy Editor Rajendra Singh Parmar regarding the viral video. “The youth who was the victim in this incident was a Dalit,” he said.
