  • Fact Check: Kim Jong Un DIDN'T speak on Israel-Palestine, video is mistranslated This is a 2020 video of the North Korean leader paying tribute to troops for their response to the Covid-19 outbreak. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video of Kim Jong Un has been mistranslated. In the original speech, that he delivered back in 2020, Kim Jong Un did not speak on Israel-Palestine at all. If some social media users are to be believed, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently spoke about the Israel-Palestine conflict, blaming American President Joe Biden for the war, and adding that World War III could begin in the coming year. The video subtitles quoted him saying: “Under the Biden administration conflicts erupt yearly. This year a war begins between Israel and Palestine. Last year a war begins between Russia and Ukraine. And two years ago billions worth of military equipment was left to the Taliban. I’m afraid that if the Biden administration does not cease to exist in the next election World War 3 may begin. Who knows what next year’s war will be. I support Donald Trump for President in 2024. Good luck to Mr Trump.” One person shared the video writing, “Guess Who Made A Statement About Israel-Hamas. First time Kim Jong Un has come out to speak on global issues, this is serious.” An archived version of a similar post can be found here. India Today Fact Check found that this video was incorrectly translated. In the original video, Kim Jong Un did not speak about the Israel-Palestine conflict at all. OUR PROBE Reverse searching keyframes of the viral video led us to a report carrying a video of the North Korean leader getting emotional while speaking at a military parade in Pyongyang on October 10, 2020. In this video, Kim Jong Un could be seen in the same outfit as the one in the viral clip. Per the report, this video was from the 75th anniversary of North Korea's ruling Party, the Workers' Party of Korea. During the speech, he apologised to North Koreans for their daily hardships as typhoons, floods, and the coronavirus pandemic battered their lives. We then found several media reports about this speech. According to a report in The Guardian, Kim Jong Un shed tears while speaking at the military parade in the capital, which featured the expected unveiling of a new intercontinental ballistic missile and other military hardware. He also thanked the troops for their efforts amid the pandemic and natural disasters. He also warned in his speech that he would “fully mobilise” his nuclear force if threatened. We also found the transcript of the full speech on the website of the National Committee on North Korea, as published and translated by the Korean Central News Agency. Here, we could not find any mention of the Israel-Palestine conflict in the whole speech. Further, we found the exact same part of the speech that could be heard in the viral video, shared by the YouTube channel “The Star”, along with English subtitles. According to it, Kim Jong Un thanked the people of North Korea and appreciated the devotion of the service personnel who mitigated natural disasters and the pandemic. Thus, it is clear that incorrect captions were added to an old speech of Kim Jong Un. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
