A June (2022) research paper published in the ScienceDirect claims covid vaccines suppress innate immunity. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False.
The Claim
A (2022) ScienceDirect study titled, “Innate immune suppression by SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations: The role of G-quadruplexes, exosomes, and MicroRNAs” claimed, “The mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were brought to market in response to the public health crises of Covid-19. The utilization of mRNA vaccines in the context of infectious disease has no precedent. The many alterations in the vaccine mRNA hide the mRNA from cellular defenses and promote a longer biological half-life and high production of spike protein. However, the immune response to the vaccine is very different from that to a SARS-CoV-2 infection”.

Do Covid vaccines reduce innate immunity?
It doesn’t seem so. No evidence confirms covid vaccines reduce innate immunity. The research paper has used the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) data to perform the study and reach a conclusion. We could not find any published report by VAERS that concludes covid vaccines reduce innate immunity.
VAERS is a ‘national early warning system’ that detects issues related to licensed vaccines. However, anyone can report an incident on VAERS. Due to this public access, the VAERS website warns against drawing unwarranted conclusions based on submitted reports. The website clearly states “VAERS is not designed to determine if a vaccine caused a health problem, but is especially useful for detecting unusual or unexpected patterns of adverse event reporting that might indicate a possible safety problem with a vaccine.”
VAERS data can only be used to suggest a correlation, not a causal link. The Healthy Indian Project (THIP) media has debunked various claims in the past that have misused VAERS here.
Besides this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website has shown that mRNA vaccines do not increase SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Conclusively, the claim that covid vaccines reduce innate immunity remains false until proven otherwise.
