  • FACT CHECK: Did The UK Ministry Of Defence Tweet That Servicemen Won’t Receive Medals At King Charles’ Coronation? A photo shared on Facebook allegedly shows a tweet from the U.K. Ministry of Defence stating that medals distributed at King Charles’ coronation won’t be given to soldiers, sailors or aviators. Verdict: False The tweet is digitally fabricated. It was originally posted to a Twitter account that self-identifies as parody. Fact Check: King Charles’ coronation will take place on May 7 and is the first to occur in Britain for 70 years, according to The Guardian. The iconic British coronation chair, which has been described as “extremely fragile,” is being restored for the occasion, BBC News reported. A Facebook post allegedly shows a tweet from the Ministry of Defence stating that soldiers, sailors and aviators will not be receiving medals at King Charles’ coronation. The alleged tweet was posted on Feb. 24. “We understand the huge disappointment for our soldiers, sailors & aviators but due to prohibitive costs, we confirm it will only staff on duty on the day & in direct support of Coronation parade who will receive medal,” the alleged tweet reads. “Police on duty & serving MPs will also be entitled to the medal.” This screenshot is digitally fabricated. The alleged tweet cannot be found on the Ministry of Defence’s verified Twitter account or other archives of the account. Likewise, there are no credible news reports to verify the claim. (FACT CHECK: Did The UK Ministry Of Defense Send This Letter About Ukrainian Trainees?) The screenshot was originally posted to Twitter by a satirical account. Their bio states “everything here is made up.” The account doubled down on the claim with another fake tweet from the Ministry of Defence claiming to confirm the news. I may have fallen victim to a fake tweet. But the update from @DefenceHQ clarifies that the information it contained was accurate. pic.twitter.com/zO7fxv4On9 — bombat_coot (@bombat_coot) February 26, 2023 Check Your Fact has reached out to the Ministry of Defence for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received. This is not the first time misinformation about foreign public figures has spread online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim a video showed a large protest against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
