  • In November 2024, videos surfaced on social media alleging that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had purchased Ford, one of the biggest names in the American automotive industry, without any evidence to corroborate the claim. The assertion was unfounded. It was not the first time unfounded rumors about Musk acquiring Ford had spread on YouTube. Snopes found several videos dating back to June 2023 alleging that Musk had purchased the brand. These videos all appeared with titles like "Elon Musk OFFICIALLY bought Ford! | HUGE NEWS!" Artificial intelligence (AI) video-creation tools seemingly helped create some of the video's narration, scripting, and sequencing. As an example, one video's narrator said: "Did you know that Ford produces a new F-150 truck every 52 seconds? Now imagine that speed combined with Tesla's cutting-edge EV technology. That's the future Elon Musk is betting on with his shocking acquisition of Ford." That YouTube video had been viewed more than 20,000 times, as of this writing, since its upload on Oct. 30, 2024. Other videos on the same topic had over 300,000 views. Posts on social media sites like X shared the claim and linked to dubious news articles sharing the same content as "proof." But there was no evidence to support the assertion that Musk had bought Ford. If, hypothetically speaking, there was even a sliver of truth to the claim — for instance, if Musk had announced a partnership with Ford that allowed its electric vehicles to use Tesla Superchargers — reputable business and automotive media outlets would have interviewed parties involved and documented the ordeal. That had not happened. In short, the claim appeared to be made up from whole cloth for the purpose of gaining clicks, or views, online. A disclaimer at the bottom of one YouTube video read: "Disclaimer: This video is based on rumors and fiction." Musk's status has made him a prominent target of misleading rumors. For example, we previously debunked the false claim that the billionaire had bought Walt Disney World or CNN.
