  • Fact Check: Old video of Jewish protest in NYC shared as recent rally in support of Gaza India Today found that the viral video shows a Jewish protest dating back to March 2014. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is from March 2014 and unrelated to current events. On October 19, hundreds of Jewish protesters were arrested for assembling on Capitol Hill, demanding the Biden administration's intervention in the siege of Gaza. A video showing a large gathering of traditionally dressed Jews has now gone viral on social media. Those who shared it claim that it showed Orthodox Jews protesting Israel's Gaza offensive. One X user shared the viral video, and wrote, "NEW YORK: thousands of Orthodox Jews came out against #Israel, declaring their support for #Palestine and asserting that #Zionism doesn't represent Jews." An archived version of this post can be seen here. However, India Today found that the viral video does not show a recent Jewish protest in New York supporting Palestinians. It is an old video from March 2014, and the protest had no connection with the Palestinian cause. OUR PROBE Conducting a reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video, we found a New York Times report from March 9, 2014, which featured a photograph of a large gathering of traditionally dressed Jews, similar to those seen in the viral video. Various elements in the video, including a large vertical banner with “NYC” written on it, and the number and arrangement of police officers in front of the crowd, matched those in the picture from the report. According to the report, thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews assembled in Lower Manhattan on March 9, 2014, to protest Israel's proposal to expand its military draft to include strictly religious citizens. Opponents of the legislation believed that compelling religious men to serve in the military would disrupt their religious education. Further, we also found a gallery of pictures from the 2014 protest on a Jewish community website. We found several pictures matching the keyframes from the viral video. A comparison between one of these pictures and the viral video can be seen below: In conclusion, an old video from an Orthodox Jewish protest is being falsely associated with the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza.
