  • In the summer of 2024, a number of viral Facebook posts claimed to show the poster for a remake of the 1986 movie "Labyrinth," which originally starred David Bowie. The new poster appeared to show Tom Hiddleston in Bowie's role and announced the remake would be released in November 2024. According to the post, actress Hailee Steinfeld would be joining Hiddleston in the remake: Get ready to embark on a mesmerizing journey through the Labyrinth with Tom Hiddleston as the enigmatic Jareth and Halee Steinfeld as the determined Sarah. This remake of the classic film features all-new music crafted by the iconic singer-songwriter, Jonathan Davis of Korn, weaving a spellbinding soundtrack that adds a modern twist to this beloved tale of magic and adventure. Join them as they navigate the twists and turns of the maze to save Sarah's baby brother from the clutches of the Goblin King. Coming to theaters in November 2024. (Facebook user "YODA BBY ABY") The poster is not real. The original post containing the fake poster appeared on YODA BBY ABY, a Facebook page that describes its output as satirical. The post was shared by another Facebook page, Vanilla 21s, in August 2024, and was reshared around 27,000 times. Many online thought it was real, posting comments like, "I just do not think this should be redone. They did it perfectly the first time and David Bowie is the only Jareth for me…" Using Google's reverse image search tool, we found the poster did not appear on any reputable news websites. As we have reported before, YODA BBY ABY has made dozens of similarly fake movie posters. The page's bio says, "I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news." Also, the page's bio lists the website screenslant.com, which displays the banner "FAKE NEWS - SATIRE - AND MORE." We should note that a sequel to the original film has been in the works for several years. According to a 2020 report on Deadline, Scott Derrickson was set to direct the film. In February 2024, amid reports that Derrickson was no longer involved, Brian Henson, son of the original director, said in an interview that it was "a project we are still very excited about." The poster by YODA BBY ABY was not the first instance of a rumored remake that proved to be fake. We previously covered a fake poster for a remake of the "Gone in 60 Seconds" action movie supposedly starring Nicolas Cage, and a fake poster for a "Stargate" remake supposedly starring Chris Evans and Rami Malek. For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
