India Today Fact Check
This video is from August 2022 and shows the Guatemalan volcano Volcán de Fuego.
Over the past few days, there have been reports of volcanic activity in various parts of the European continent, with notable incidents occurring in Iceland and Italy. Meanwhile, a fantastic video of a volcanic eruption was widely shared. The video showed red-hot magma being ejected into the sky with many people watching this sight.
"In Sicily, Italy, the volcano Etna has erupted. Eyewitnesses are sharing videos. The height of the gas and ash column reaches 4,500 meters above sea level," read an X post containing the clip. At the same time, the official Facebook pages of both ET Now and Kyiv Post also showcased this video, calling it Italy's Mount Etna. Archived versions of both posts can be seen here and here.
India Today Fact Check found that the video is nearly a year old and from Guatemala, not Mount Etna in Italy.
GETTING TO THE CORE
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an Instagram post dated August 28, 2022, containing the same footage. The caption of this post indicated that the video was filmed at Volcan de Fuego, located in Guatemala in North America. The caption also added that to license the video, one could mail “licensing@viralhog.com”.
Based on these clues, an advanced search with keywords took us to the video uploaded to the verified channel of Viral Hog on September 9, 2022.
The description of this video mentioned that the eruption took place on August 26 that year, with a brief statement from the eyewitness of the rare occurrence, making it quite evident that the video in question has nothing to do with recent volcanic activity at Italy's Mount Etna.
We also came across several videos of Mount Etna's volcanic eruption uploaded to the YouTube channels of The Sun and The Independent on November 13 and 14.
Upon comparing screengrabs from the visuals of Mount Etna's eruption with the video of the Guatemalan volcano, it becomes clear that there are significant differences in the visuals of both events.
Thus, it’s clear that an old video of a volcanic eruption in Guatemala was falsely shared as a recent incident in Italy’s Mount Etna.
