This incident is from Japan, not India.
A 28-year-old Spanish travel vlogger’s alleged gangrape in Jharkhand’s Dumka in March brought into sharp focus women’s and tourists’ safety issues in India. Now, a disturbing video of men openly harassing a woman on a street is making the rounds on social media with people claiming it showed a foreign tourist being sexually harassed in India.
In the video, men could be seen harassing a woman with a face mask, attempting to grope at her chest, as she shouts, “I’m not taking my hand off. No, I’m not taking my hand off. Oh no, stop it, no. Guys, I can keep my damn hands on during a photo.” An X user shared the clip and wrote, “A foreign female tourist sexually harassed in India. The men are seen touching and grabbing her as she is scared and protesting. It's unbelievable how dangerous it is for women to travel in India.” Its archive can be seen here.
India Today found that this incident is from Japan’s Shinjuku, not India.
OUR PROBE
Responding to the viral clip, many claimed that this video was not from India. We also noticed words on storefront signs in the video that appeared incomprehensible. However, when we laterally inverted a screengrab from the video, we found that it read “Toho”.
Next, we reverse-searched the viral video's keyframes, which led us to its longer version shared on YouTube with the title “Guys Harass Japanese female streamer! New Twitch moments'' on September 23, 2022.
In this video, we noticed “Toho Cinemas Imax” written in the background. “Toho Cinemas” is a Japanese movie theatre company.
GEO-LOCATING THE VIDEO
We searched for various Toho Cinemas Imax theatres on Google Maps. We found that the location seen in the viral video was from Tokyo’s Shinjuku city. A comparison between the clip and Google Street View can be seen below.
According to an August 22, 2021, report by Sportskeeda, the video Japanese Twitch streamer “Sushipotato” being harassed during a live stream. As per the report, “Sushipotato” often roams around on the streets of Japan while livestreaming and interacting with strangers.
To sum it up, an old video of a live streamer being harassed in Japan was falsely attributed to India.
