  • Last Updated on September 17, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is replacing salt with mRNA salt substitutes. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim A video circulating on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, suggests that the FDA is considering using salt substitutes to lower sodium levels in standardized foods. However, it falsely asserts that this involves replacing regular salt with an mRNA fake salt supposedly backed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Fact Check Is the FDA replacing salt with mRNA salt substitutes? The FDA is not currently replacing salt with mRNA salt substitutes. However, the FDA is considering a proposed rule that would allow food manufacturers to use salt substitutes in place of traditional salt in standardized foods. In April 2023, the FDA released a proposal to change the rules for making food. This proposal would allow food makers to use different things instead of regular salt to make their products less salty. However, the new rules do not specify which salt substitutes can be used, but they have to be safe and work like salt in food. The social media post in question claims that food companies are using a mRNA chemical instead of salt. However, no credible scientific evidence confirms the same. There is also a rumor that Bill Gates is involved in this, but again we found no credible evidence that can support this claim. Gates did invest in a company related to salt substitutes in the past, but that does not mean he is directly funding these companies now. Addressing myths about mRNA vaccines, including those involving the U.S. Supreme Court’s supposed judgments, requires understanding the real applications of mRNA technology, such as potential uses in food safety The People’s Voice website has also circulated this claim. This isn’t the first time we have encountered inconsistent claims shared by this website. It often shares stories that do not have any scientific proof. One claim suggests that the Covid vaccine is causing more harm to people of color than to white people. Another claim alleges that the Dutch are euthanizing people without their consent. Recently, they published yet another article asserting that Bill Gates’ lab-grown meat causes cancer.
