| - A rumor that the prime minister of Greenland, Múte Bourup Egede, made a sharp comment about U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration being moved indoors because of cold weather circulated online in January 2025.
The alleged social media post from the prime minister read, "If Trump can't handle one polar vortex, he can't handle Greenland." The purported comment refers to reports that Trump "worked up" a deal to purchase the island.
One user posted the claim on X (archived) and said, "Brilliant trolling of @realDonaldTrump attributed to Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede. 'If Trump can't handle one polar vortex, he can't handle Greenland.' 🐻❄️ #TrumpInauguration2025"

The claim was shared widely across social media platforms including X (archived), Threads (archived) and Instagram (archived).
Some readers seemed to accept the claim as fact. However, there was no evidence that Egede posted this to his social media channels, nor has any reputable outlet reported on the claim.
Rather, the rumor about Greenland's prime minister commenting on Trump's inauguration originated with a post on X (archived) from an account called The Halfway Post — a social media account that describes its output as humorous or satirical in nature. The bio on the X page reads: "Halfway true comedy and satire by @DashMacIntyre. I don't report the facts, I improve them." Furthermore, The Halfway Post sells a book titled "Satire in the Trump Years."
The full post read, "BREAKING: After Donald Trump announced he was giving his inauguration speech indoors on account of the cold weather, the chancellor of Greenland taunted him on social media saying, 'If Trump can't handle one polar vortex, he can't handle Greenland.'"
The fictional story spread alongside ongoing media coverage of Trump's inauguration in Washington on Jan. 20, 2025. Greenland's prime minister has previously posted about Trump's comments regarding the island, such as a Jan. 16, 2025 Facebook post (archived) that read in part, "We don't want to be Americans, but we want to expand our already existing cooperation. And that our future is decided by us."
Snopes has previously covered Trump's claim about having "worked up" a deal to buy Greenland, which was found to be false.
Snopes has also addressed similar satirical claims about Donald Trump in the past, including the assertion that he was deemed a drag queen in a Florida court, that he once posted on social media, "Your life is a total mess!" and that he rejected female jurors for "not being his type."
For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
