  • Last Updated on October 7, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A video on social media claims that ingesting hydrogen peroxide can treat serious diseases like AIDS and herpes. We fact-checked and found the claim is False. The Claim A Facebook video shows that 35 per cent of food-grade hydrogen peroxide has amazing healing benefits for the body. The video suggests people should mix three drops of 35% of food-grade hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water. This mixture when consumed three times a week, can treat AIDS and herpes. The video has received 11.1k likes and 7.4k shares till we last checked. Fact Check Should you consume hydrogen peroxide to treat AIDS and herpes? No. There is no scientific evidence to confirm that hydrogen peroxide can treat AIDS or herpes. An article published in Science Daily in 2006 shows that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement in 1989 to warn consumers against using hydrogen peroxide products that are promoted illegally as an effective treatment for AIDS and cancer. Poison.org website informs that food grade contains 35 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Despite its name, food grade can cause serious internal burns if swallowed. Ingesting hydrogen peroxide in large amounts can also cause serious health problems that need immediate doctor attention. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is water with an extra oxygen molecule. This compound is often used as a mouth rinse or teeth whitener when used in low concentrations. Food-grade peroxide is used for processing and bleaching certain foods and can be toxic if it is inhaled, ingested, or comes into contact with skin. As we investigate the myths surrounding hydrogen peroxide, it’s essential to also examine the complexities of infections like Donovanosis, which might not receive adequate attention. Discover more in our article on Donovanosis: A Flesh-Eating STD.
