Quick Take
A social media post claims that a face pack made from licorice and curd can make your skin fair. After fact checking, we found out this is mostly false.
The Claim
A viral Threads post suggests that applying a paste made from licorice powder and curd can lead to a fairer skin tone.
Fact Check
Can licorice powder actually lighten skin?
It may, to an extent. Licorice powder can help with skin tone. It contains glabridin, a compound known for its skin-lightening effects. Glabridin works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin colour. Therefore, licorice may help reduce hyperpigmentation, such as dark spots. However, it won’t dramatically change your skin tone to “fair.” Because, that depends on genetics. We have also come across claims like rubbing a wet towel can make you fair. However, this is entirely false.
Is curd beneficial for the skin?
It may, but there’s no strong evidence yet. Curd can offer several skin benefits and has been used in our traditional face masks. It contains lactic acid, which acts as a gentle exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion. Curd also has moisturising properties that keep skin hydrated. These benefits can enhance overall skin appearance, but they won’t lead to a significant lightening of skin tone.
We reached out to Dr Rashi Soni, Co-founder and Consulting Dermatologist, Aesthetician, and Hair Transplant Surgeon at Rashi Hospital in Mumbai, for her perspective on curd for skin lightening. She says, “Curd is beneficial for the skin in several ways. It contains lactic acid, which acts as a gentle exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion. Additionally, curd is naturally rich in moisture, which can keep your skin hydrated and supple. This makes it particularly helpful for those with dry or flaky skin.”
Dr Soni adds, “Moreover, the probiotics found in curd can help maintain a healthy skin barrier, supporting overall skin health. However, while curd can be a valuable part of your skincare routine, it’s important to remember that it should complement a well-rounded approach. This includes using sunscreen, staying hydrated, and following a balanced diet. Embracing your skin’s natural state is key to achieving a healthy glow!”
There are also claims which suggest home remedies for fairer feet. But, this is inaccurate.
Can combining licorice powder and curd enhance skin fairness?
Not exactly. The combination of licorice powder and curd can be soothing and may help improve skin texture and tone. While this blend can promote moisture and mild exfoliation, the claims of achieving “fair” skin are misleading. Skin lightening is a complex process influenced by various factors, including genetics and sun exposure.
Many dermatologists warn against the pursuit of fair skin, emphasising that skin colour is largely determined by genetics. They advise against using products that promise unrealistic results, as these can sometimes contain harmful ingredients. Instead, it’s better to focus on maintaining healthy skin through proper skincare, hydration, and sun protection.
We connected with Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, for his take on licorice and curd for fair skin. He says, “While licorice powder and curd can contribute to a healthier-looking complexion, it’s important to understand that no natural remedy can drastically change your skin tone. The goal should be to achieve healthy, radiant skin rather than focusing solely on fairness. Embrace your natural skin colour and prioritise skincare routines that nourish and protect your skin.”
We reached out to Dr Annusuiya Gohil, MD Scholar at the All India Institute of Ayurveda, for her expert opinion on whether mulethi and curd can whiten skin colour. She says, “Skin fairness is mainly determined by genetics, along with environmental factors. While you can improve skin brightness, you can’t change your natural skin tone—it can only be enhanced. Over time, factors like ageing, exposure to harsh conditions, and diet can cause skin to dull, but you can work to restore its original glow. However, topical products won’t alter your inherent complexion.”
Dr Gohil adds, “Mulethi, if taken internally, might help brighten the skin, and applying it can reduce pigmentation, but it won’t change your natural skin colour.”
Similarly, aloe vera for fair skin is also popular, but even this isn’t backed by scientific evidence.
Are there any side effects of licorice powder and curd on the skin?
Generally, both licorice powder and curd are safe for topical use. However, some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially those with sensitive skin. It’s a good idea to perform a patch test before applying any new product to a larger area. If any adverse reactions occur, it’s best to stop using it and consult a healthcare professional.
THIP Media Take
In summary, while licorice powder and curd can provide some benefits for the skin, the claim that they can make your skin “fair” is mostly false. Both ingredients may improve skin health and appearance, but they are not miracle solutions for drastic skin lightening. Achieving an even and radiant complexion requires a holistic approach that includes proper skincare and sun protection. Instead of chasing unrealistic beauty standards, focus on nurturing your skin.
