  • Fact Check: Old pics from Gaza falsely shared as recent attacks on US bases in Syria India Today found that both these images are old and related to Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Both these images are old and show Israeli attacks on Gaza. US military bases in Iraq and Syria were recently attacked and a group of Iran-backed militias have claimed responsibility for the attack. US authorities have reportedly blamed Iran for actively facilitating some of these attacks. Amid these developments, two images supposedly showing the recent attack on US military bases in Syria have gone viral on social media. A Twitter user shared these images with the claim, “Consequences of attacks on the Al-Omar oil field in Syria, where US troops are stationed.” The archived version of this claim can be seen here. India Today found that these images are neither recent nor from Syria. Our Probe Using reverse search, we found the first image on the stock photo website Alamy. As per the information on the website, this photo was taken on November 12, 2018, and shows an Israeli airstrike on the Hamas-run television station Al-Aqsa TV in Gaza City. We found similar visuals related to this incident in a November 13, 2018, report by Turkish media outlet Haber 7. This proved that this photo had nothing to do with the recent attack on a US base in Syria. What about the second image? A quick reverse search of the second image led us to a February 2020 report published by The Guardian. According to this report, this image shows an Israeli airstrike at Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The photo was taken by photographer Said Khatib of the AFP. We also found this image on the Stock photo website Getty Images where the date of its capture was stated as February 23, 2020. Reportedly, the Israeli military carried out air strikes against the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza and Syria in response to rockets allegedly fired by them at the time. To sum up, old images from the Gaza Strip are being falsely shared with the backdrop of recent attacks on a US military base in Syria.
