With the 2021 Assembly election approaching in Assam, the tea gardens in the state have taken centre-stage as political leaders join tea workers and try plucking tea leaves. On March 2, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited tea gardens in Assam and interacted with the workers. Now, two images of tea gardens shared by the Facebook page of “Assam Bachao” a Congress campaign page - have created a new controversy. The two photos by the “Assam Bachao” page show sprawling tea gardens and claim that these are pictures of Assam tea plantations. India Today Anti-Fake News War room (AFWA) found that none of the two images is from Assam. While the first image is of the Bagua tea garden, the second one is of the Bihu tea garden both in Taiwan. AFWA PROBE State’s finance minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sharma reacted strongly on Twitter and claimed that both the images shared by Congress are not from Assam but Taiwan. With the help of reverse image search, we found the truth behind the two images posted by the Facebook page “Assam Bachao”. Viral image 1 The first image is available on various websites including stock image site Getty and Shutter Stock. All these websites state that the image is from Taiwan. According to some websites, the image was from the Bagua tea garden, Taiwan. Viral image 2 The second image is also widely available on the internet. As per Getty images and Media bakery - another website for curated images, this is the “Bihu tea garden” in Taiwan. Hence, we can safely conclude that the images posted by the “Assam Bachao” Facebook page are actually from tea plantations in Taiwan and not Assam.
