  • Fact Check: Unrelated to India@75-This video of Shivraj Singh Chouhan hoisting BJP flag is from 2018 As India gets ready to celebrate 75 years of its independence, both social media and the streets have been filled with the Indian flag. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from 2018 and is unrelated to India's Independence Day celebrations. This took place during a BJP event near Khajuraho, MP. As India gets ready to celebrate 75 years of its independence, both social media and the streets have been filled with the Indian flag. This has only been boosted by the government of India’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign, a part of its Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative. Amid all this, a video featuring Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been shared widely along with critical comments. The video shows Chouhan unfurling the Bharatiya Janata Party flag as someone can be heard singing the national anthem. Many on Facebook shared the video and wrote captions criticising Chouhan. For example, “Even in old age, you could not understand that the country is before the party! Neither Modiji nor you are following ‘Rajdharma’! Only those who fill the party's pocket in the name of the national flag can consider the BJP flag bigger than the tricolour! BJP is insulting the tricolour.” AFWA’s investigation found that the viral video is old and unrelated to the celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence. The viral posts have been archived here and here. AFWA Probe When we searched online for news on this, we found a tweet by journalist Dinesh Shukla from May 14, 2018. Sharing the same video, Shukla wrote that as part of the Chalo Panchayat campaign in Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan hoisted the BJP flag in the Khajua village near Khajuraho. @BJP4India @ChouhanShivraj ... ? pic.twitter.com/QXjPLZ6e0b — Dinesh Shukla (@dineshhshukla) May 14, 2018 Following a subsequent refined search, we found a Patrika report from May 16, 2018, regarding the incident. Per the report, on May 14, 2018, during a “Panchayat Chalo” event, Chouhan hoisted a BJP flag and the national anthem was sung. Opposition leaders criticised him and the party for reciting the national anthem after hoisting the party flag. The report also carried screenshots from the same video. Thus, we were able to conclude that this incident happened four years ago and has nothing to do with the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
