  • Fact Check: Journalists' protest against Trinamool passed off as anti-BJP rally in Kolkata On social media, a picture is being circulated of a woman holding such a poster as part of a rally. The text on the placard says, "No More HATHRAS! NO VOTE TO BJP! #NoVoteToBJP". India Today's AFWA probes the truth. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The picture is morphed. In the original image, the text on the placard reads “Shut Camera”. The picture was taken in 2018 when journalists were protesting against the Trinamool Congress. With elections in West Bengal just days away, both the BJP and Trinamool Congress are engaged in a bitter turf war in a state where the lotus has bloomed lately. The tragic incident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, where a girl’s father was murdered by her alleged molester has also provided ammunition to the Opposition to hit out at the BJP. Amid this high-voltage campaign, several activists have launched a “No Vote To BJP” campaign in Kolkata. On social media, a picture is being circulated of a woman holding such a poster as part of a rally. The text on the placard says, “No More HATHRAS! NO VOTE TO BJP! #NoVoteToBJP”. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the image is morphed. The original picture has no connection with the upcoming elections in Bengal and was taken in 2018 during a rally against the Trinamool Congress to protest attacks on journalists. Several Facebook users have shared this picture. The archived versions can be seen here and here. AFWA probe Using reverse image search, we found the original picture on the website of “Alamy”, dated April 11, 2018. Here the caption says, “A woman seen holding a placard during the protest. Hundreds of journalists protest against ruling party’s alleged attack on journalists across Bengal during Panchayat nomination coverage. The rally started at Mayo Road Mahatma Gandhi Statue and culminated at Dorina Crossing in Kolkata. Wearing black bands on arms and covering their mouths with black scarfs, hundreds of city's journalists, cameramen and photojournalists took part in the protest rally.” In the original picture, the placard held by the woman reads, “Shut Camera”. We also found a news article by “National Herald”, which carried a picture of the same woman with “Shut Camera” written on her placard. Hence, it is clear that the viral picture is altered and not linked with the “No Vote To BJP” campaign in Bengal. The picture is three years old and the woman was part of a rally against the Trinamool Congress to protest attacks on journalists.
