Fact Check
Can greying of hair be reversed?
Mostly not. It is not possible to reverse the greying of hair if the cause of greying is genetic. In case of nutritional deficiencies and underlying medical conditions, you can gradually slow down or even reverse the process. Try maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced, nutritious diet and low-stress levels if the cause of grey hair is nutritional deficiency, medical condition, or emotional stress.
Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director, Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA), says, ‘Greying of the hair is part of the natural process of ageing. The ageing process, greying, etc., are influenced by genetics and also environmental influences. Genetic or age-related greying of hair cannot be reversed. Whereas greying of hair due to other environmental and lifestyle influences can be slowed down.”
He further adds, “Preventive measures can be taken to preserve the quality and colour of hair. From a careful study of Ayurvedic texts and based on inputs from experienced clinicians, we can say that carefully administered Ayurvedic treatments can help to slow down greying of hair due to causes other than genetics, and also help in preserving hair quality and colour from a preventive point of view.”
Can putting oil through the nose impact the graying of hair?
No. Even though few claim that putting oil through the nose can impact greying of hair, there is no research that proves this theory to be true. Further research is needed to find the benefits of Nasya therapy. But, till now greying of hair, if happening genetically can’t be reversed.
Dr. P. Rammanohar further clarifies this by stating that, “Nasyam or administering medicines through the nostrils is a method of treatment recommended in Ayurveda for treating many ailments. Ayurveda also recommends Nasya for greying of hair, but only as one of the components of treatment. There is no evidence to support the claim that nasal drops with any herbal oil is a sure shot cure for greying of hair. Rigorous studies are needed to assess the role of nasal administration of medicines in management of greying of hair.”
