India Today Fact Check
This video has been on the internet since January 2022 at least. Many claim it shows New Year’s celebrations in Naples, Italy. However, we haven’t been able to independently verify that.
A day after Diwali, on October 25, Delhi's air quality dropped to “very poor”. While a number of factors like stubble burning, construction dust, and vehicular pollution account for Delhi’s annual deterioration of air quality, firecrackers on Diwali play their part as well. The Delhi government had earlier announced a fine and/or imprisonment for those found bursting or selling firecrackers on Diwali this year. However, many flouted this ban across the city.
Several people on social media shared a video of a city skyline dominated by a stunning display of fireworks. Those sharing it claimed this was how Delhi celebrated Diwali night.
AFWA found that the video has been on the internet since January this year at least, and therefore could not have been from Diwali 2022.
AFWA PROBE
A number of people who claimed the video was from Delhi were quote-tweeting the Twitter account “@WokePandemic”, which shared the video on October 24 with the caption, “Happy Diwali MiLords”.
We found that the same account on January 3 had shared the same video claiming it to be from Italy’s Naples.
We further reverse-searched the video’s keyframes and found the video shared by multiple people on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube in the first week of January 2022, all of whom claimed it was from Naples.
The video and its screenshots were also carried by multiple media reports from January 2022, that said despite a ban issued by the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi, people had celebrated the new year with fireworks.
There are several other videos of fireworks from the 2022 new year’s celebrations in Naples available on social media.
We couldn’t independently verify the location of the viral video. AFWA has reached out to people from Naples to verify its location. This story will be updated as and when we receive a response.
It is, however, clear that the video is at least ten months old and not related to Diwali celebrations in Delhi in 2022.
