  • Fact Check: NOT political vendetta - this woman accused cops of torture during Imran Khan regime in 2021 Amid allegations of the abuse of jailed PTI women in Pakistan, a video of a woman raising her voice against misconduct by the Pak police is going viral. This video, however, is from 2021. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from 2021 and has no links to the ongoing situation in Pakistan. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged the Pakistani judiciary to take suo motu notice of the alleged torture and abuse of female Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers who were detained following the May 9 riots. However, Pakistan’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah hit back at the PTI for allegedly plotting criminal activities to malign the law enforcement agencies of Pakistan. With this in the backdrop, a video featuring a woman sitting in a police station, alleging misconduct at the hands of police is making the rounds on social media platforms. One person shared it writing, “Evidence of the rape of women in custody is also in this video and Rana's midnight press conference seems to be exposing more.” Many others urged authorities to conduct an inquiry. Archived versions of these posts can be found here, here, and here. India Today, in its investigation, found that this video is from 2021 and has no links to the ongoing situation in Pakistan. Our Probe We found that the official account of Pakistan’s Punjab Police had replied to one of the viral tweets saying that this incident that took place in 2021. The woman who can be seen in the video was Dua Chaudhary, who came to file an FIR against her husband. The tweet also mentioned the FIR number for this case: “1506/21”. Using this clue, we ran a keyword search in Urdu and found that several people had shared the video in question in August 2021. Per these posts, Pakistani actress Dua Chaudhary was allegedly tortured by her husband Salman Shaukat. When she went to file a complaint at Ichhra police station in Lahore, SHO Manawan along with other policemen allegedly abused her and tried to steal evidence against Shaukat. One such post had multiple videos showing Chaudhary in the police station, narrating her ordeal. We also found multiple news reports about this incident that stated that Chaudhary’s husband Salman Shaukat was SHO Manawan's brother. We also found a tweet containing photos of the police complaint in Urdu, but we could not independently verify its authenticity. Thus, it’s clear that this video is old and from Imran Khan’s regime.
