  • FACT CHECK: No, Elon Musk Did Not Make Post Criticizing US For Ending Apartheid In South Africa An image shared on Threads allegedly shows a post from Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk criticizing the United States for helping to end apartheid in his home country of South Africa. Post by @jetsfoView on Threads Verdict: False This is not a genuine Musk post. It cannot be found on his X account. Fact Check: Tesla shares rose on Wednesday following former President Donald Trump’s presidential victory, as people expect Musk and his company to benefit from the win, according to AP News. Tesla shares went up by over 14% while shares of competitor electric vehicle companies plummeted, the outlet reported. An X image allegedly shows a Musk post criticizing the United States’ role in ending apartheid in South Africa. The post shared a screenshot of the alleged post. “There sure is a lot of chatter about me being a foreign-born person having an outsized influence on US politics, so allow me to remind everyone of the United States overstepping its bounds by helping to end apartheid in my home country. Maybe we call it even?” the alleged post reads. This image has been digitally fabricated. There are no credible news reports about Musk making this post. Likewise, the post cannot be found on Elon Musk’s X account. Musk was born in South Africa and moved to the US to attend the University of Pennsylvania, according to BBC. The U.S. Congress in 1986 passed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, imposing sanctions on South Africa’s apartheid government at the time, according to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of State. LeadStories also debunked this claim. (RELATED: No, Elon Musk Did Not Change X’s Like Button To Promote Trump In Election) Check Your Fact reached out to an X spokesperson for comment.
