Quick Take
A social media post claims that wearing clip-on earrings reduces weight in just four weeks. We fact-checked and found the claim is False. Weight loss is induced by increasing the body’s metabolic rate through a healthy diet, exercise and regular health checkups.
The Claim
A video on Facebook shows women losing weight after wearing clip-on earrings claiming to be a kind of body detox. The video also claims that the product shows unbelievable results within four to eight weeks.
Fact Check
Do clip-on earrings reduce weight in four weeks?
No. Wearing clip-on earrings cannot reduce weight. The video is promoting a product from LockYouth.com, an e-commerce website. The website claims clip-on earrings use magnet therapy to induce weight losss. However, we could not find any evidence that shows whether magnet therapy can induce weight loss within four to eight weeks, as claimed on the product page.
Even a research paper published in 2006 informs that people should not be advised of magnet therapy as it has no proven benefit. Also, if there is any healing effect of magnets, it is apparently small since published research is not enough to establish any therapeutic effect. This paper further warns people against splurging on such products.
We also found another research published in 2021 that shows the combination of pulsed magnetic therapy and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise might have a positive effect on body mass density. But pulsed magnetic therapy is not given through clip-on earrings.
Auricular acupuncture is given on the ears and is often associated with weight loss. In this context, we found a research paper published in 2015 that shows auricular acupuncture might control satiety to impact weight loss. But the procedure follows the insertion of fine needles in the ears, not wearing clip-on earrings.
Weight loss is induced by increasing the metabolic rate which clip-on earrings do not seem to do. Metabolic rate can be increased by regularly eating a healthy diet, undergoing regular health checkups and doing exercise which is a significant metabolism booster.
Dr Raman Kapur, MBBS, MD (Medicine Alternativa), says, “Auricular acupuncture is an effective technique for treating many ailments. There are specific ear acupuncture points, which are very useful to reduce the patients’ appetite and reduce cravings for food and sweets. It helps in an easier weight loss programme. Just ear acupuncture or putting ear staples, as mentioned in the claim, is not effective at all. Ear acupuncture combined with body acupuncture and a good diet plan is the way forward to reduce weight.”
We checked with Senior Physiotherapist Upma Lal whether clip-on earrings can help reduce weight. To this, she said, “No, it’s a vague subject and has not been explored enough. Such a practice is often sold as alternative therapy in the market which does not provide sure shot results. In old times, clips and piercings used to be done in earlobes to promote good health, not for weight loss. Also, magnet therapy is better to maintain good health and not for weight loss. For weight loss, a tremendous workout along with healthy diet is essential.”
