  • Last Updated on January 9, 2025 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A video on social media claims that cucumber extract, jojoba oil, and almond oil (badam rogan) can whiten or lighten the skin in intimate areas. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim Mridulmadhok, an influencer posted a video on Instagram that has received 49,750 likes and approximately 421k shares at the time of writing this fact-check. In the video, he asserts that applying cucumber extract, jojoba oil, and almond oil (badam rogan) can help lighten the skin in sensitive intimate areas. He also mentions a product or recipe that can be obtained by sending him a direct message. While reviewing the available information online, we found that Mridul Modhak holds a BSc degree in Engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile. Fact Check Can cucumber extract whiten your private area? No, cucumber extract can not whiten your private area. Cucumber extract is primarily known for its cooling, hydrating, and soothing effects on skin rejuvenation. It’s often used in skincare products for reducing puffiness, irritation, and swelling. While cucumber can refresh the skin and help keep it moisturised, there is no scientific backing to support the idea that it can change the skin’s colour, especially in sensitive areas like the private parts. How does cucumber extract affect the skin? Cucumber extract contains vitamins like Vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help to repair and hydrate the skin, making it appear smoother and healthier. However, these properties don’t influence melanin production, which is responsible for the skin’s pigmentation. Therefore, while cucumber can improve skin appearance by reducing dryness and irritation, it won’t lighten or whiten your skin in the way you may hope. Why doesn’t cucumber work for whitening? Cucumbers contain only mild astringent properties, meaning they can tighten the skin, but they don’t have any impact on pigment production. Melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, is produced by skin cells called melanocytes. If you’re looking for significant changes in skin tone, you would need to look for treatments or ingredients that actually influence melanin production or work to exfoliate dark skin cells. Cucumber simply doesn’t offer that. Does jojoba oil lighten the skin in intimate areas? No, jojoba oil does not lighten the skin. Jojoba oil is often praised for its moisturising and healing properties, which can help maintain the skin’s natural barrier and soothe dryness. It’s rich in vitamins and fatty acids that can improve the overall texture and health of your skin. However, when it comes to lightening or whitening the skin, jojoba oil simply doesn’t have that effect. How does jojoba oil benefit the skin? Jojoba oil acts as a natural moisturiser that mimics the skin’s natural oils, making it great for keeping skin soft and hydrated. It can also help to balance oil production, which is especially helpful for individuals with dry or acne-prone skin. By keeping the skin moisturised, jojoba oil may reduce the appearance of skin issues like dryness, flakiness, or irritation. But this is very different from lightening or whitening skin. Why doesn’t jojoba oil lighten skin? There’s no scientific evidence to suggest jojoba oil can lighten skin. Skin lightening usually involves reducing the production of melanin or removing the excess pigmented cells, and jojoba oil doesn’t possess any ingredients or compounds that affect melanin production. It is a great product for skin health, but it should not be expected to alter skin tone or whiten intimate areas. Can badam rogan (almond oil) help whiten skin? No, almond oil (Badam Rogan) does not have skin-whitening properties. Almond oil is often marketed as a solution for enhancing skin tone and texture, but its effects are largely related to hydration and nourishment rather than lightening skin. While almond oil can certainly help keep your skin soft, smooth, and well-hydrated, the idea of it ‘whitening’ the skin is misleading. How does almond oil affect the skin? Almond oil is rich in vitamins such as Vitamin E, which is known for its ability to repair and protect the skin. It’s a great emollient, meaning it softens and smoothens the skin, making it feel moisturised. Some individuals may also use almond oil to help lighten dark spots or hyperpigmentation, but this does not equate to full-on skin whitening. It may reduce the appearance of dark spots over time, but it will not drastically alter the overall skin tone. Why does almond oil not lighten skin? Almond oil is not formulated to interfere with melanin production or to reduce pigmentation across larger areas. While it may help with the appearance of uneven skin tone or minor dark spots, it does not “whiten” the skin in a way many people might expect. The improvement in the skin’s appearance often comes from better hydration and smoother skin texture, rather than an actual change in pigmentation. What do the experts say? Dr. Sachin Gupta, Consultant Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, explained “A mixture of cucumber extract, jojoba oil, and badam rogan (almond oil) is often used in skincare for its hydrating and soothing properties. While these ingredients can help improve the skin’s overall appearance and health, there is no scientific evidence to support that they can significantly whiten the intimate area. Cucumber extract may help with cooling and brightening temporarily, jojoba oil can moisturize, and almond oil may help with skin nourishment, but these ingredients do not specifically target or change skin pigmentation. It’s important to be cautious and consult a dermatologist before trying any skin-lightening treatments in sensitive areas.” Dr Rashi Soni, Co-founder and Consulting Dermatologist at Rashi Hospital in Mumbai, said, “While certain oils are often claimed to lighten the skin due to their natural properties, there is no guaranteed way to permanently whiten dark skin using oils. Skin tone is primarily determined by genetics and melanin production. Oils may help in brightening the skin temporarily or improving skin health, but they do not alter the natural color of your skin significantly.” Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant based in Lucknow, said, “While there are creams and lotions marketed to lighten the intimate area, it’s important to be cautious. Many of these products contain ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, or niacinamide, which can help reduce hyperpigmentation. However, results vary, and the safety and effectiveness of these products depend on the specific formulation and your skin type. It’s always recommended to consult with a dermatologist before using such products to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your skin.” Why is it hard to whiten skin naturally? Skin whitening isn’t as simple as applying a topical remedy. Skin tone is largely determined by genetics and melanin production. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the colour of your skin, hair, and eyes. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin appears. This natural skin pigment serves to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, so attempting to ‘whiten’ your skin can be counterproductive and even harmful in some cases. Dr. Jyoti Agarkar, MD (Dermatology), emphasizes, “Our body and skin are beautiful gifts from God, and we should appreciate them rather than trying to change their natural color. I always recommend a healthy diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and adequate water intake to my patients. These habits promote a natural glow that no artificial whitening product can replicate. Additionally, when selecting skincare products, it’s important to choose those that are suited to your skin type.” Can natural ingredients affect melanin? Natural ingredients like cucumber extract, jojoba oil, and almond oil do not influence melanin production in a way that would cause noticeable changes in skin tone. There are ingredients that may help with skin exfoliation or sun protection, but no topical treatment can safely alter melanin levels to the extent of ‘whitening’ the skin. Trying to lighten intimate areas naturally is difficult, and trying to achieve drastic changes can lead to unwanted side effects, including skin irritation, sensitivity, or permanent damage. It’s best to focus on maintaining the health of your skin rather than chasing after unrealistic beauty standards. Conclusion Instead of searching for quick fixes or following unverified beauty trends, prioritize maintaining healthy, nourished skin. If you have concerns about skin pigmentation, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional who can offer safe, evidence-based advice. Keep in mind that social media thrives on viewership, and many content creators use health-related topics for entertainment. Always seek professional medical guidance when dealing with health issues.
