  • Fact Check: Cars on fire, LV store looting in France? Neither video shows French riots Both videos are old and also not from France. The first video is from Australia, while the second video is from the US. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a salvage car auction centre in Perth, Australia. Reportedly, the fire erupted on April 28 due to an electrical fault in one of the cars. After five days of intense rioting, things in France appear to be subsiding. However, social media continues to be inundated with numerous videos claiming to show the riots. In this report. In this report, we will fact-check two such videos. Cars up in flames This video shows dozens of vehicles engulfed in flames in a large car yard. Allegedly, the video shot on July 2 in Marseille, France, showed how rioters set fire to a parking lot filled with brand-new vehicles. Through a keyword search, we found that the video was from Perth, Australia. Similar videos and screenshots from them were used in reports by The Guardian and ABC News. According to these reports, on April 28, a fire at an auction yard affected about a hundred cars. Reportedly, the fire was sparked by an electrical fault in one of the cars. Videos from the incident were also shared on social media on April 28. Thus, it’s clear that this video is not from France at all. Looting at Louis Vuitton store The second video in circulation shows a group of people ransacking a Louis Vuitton store. Through a reverse search, we found longer versions of the same video and screenshots from it used by YouTube channels and media organisations in May 2020. According to reports from the time, the video was from a Louis Vuitton store in Portland, United States. Reportedly, during protests following the death of George Floyd, a group of protesters ransacked the store. With the help of Google Maps, we were able to confirm that the Louis Vuitton store seen in the video is located in Pioneer Place, a shopping mall in downtown Portland. A comparison between a higher-resolution version of the viral video and photos of the store shared on Google Maps can be seen below. This proves that this video had nothing to do with the ongoing riots in France. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
