| - False: Video of former Indonesian minister promoting health product is manipulated
A video posted on X on June 20, allegedly showing former Indonesian Health Minister Dr Terawan Agus Putranto promoting a milk health product for joint pain, has garnered over a hundred likes and more than 30 retweets within a day.
The 15-second video shows Terawan speaking in Indonesian, urging people who suffer from “bone and joint pain” to follow his treatment. “All symptoms will disappear after two weeks and all joint pain will never return after four weeks,” he says.
However, the video has been manipulated, seemingly with generative AI tools for voice cloning and lip-sync. Terawan, a radiologist who worked as a military physician and briefly took office as health minister between October 2019 and December 2020, mentioned nothing about any health products in the original video.
A reverse image search found a TV news report posted on the YouTube channel of Indonesian news programme Seputar iNews on Oct. 23, 2019.
The original video report shows Terawan saying farewell to his staff at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta hours before he was sworn in as health minister at the presidential palace.
The misleading video corresponds with the 0:46 to 0:57 marks of the original video.
The Seputar iNews footage shows him delivering a speech, saying: “Although people criticise us, it is better for us to keep on serving. Don’t lose our spirit to give the best to our country and nation through our work in treating patients.”
In the original broadcast, Terawan’s voice echoes through the sound system, while the voice in the manipulated video is clear and has no background noise.
Annie Lab has also noticed that the audio track in the misleading video continues seamlessly, although the footage shows a visual jump cut.
It indicates that the manipulated version of his speech was added later (see below).
We extracted the audio track and ran it through a generative AI detector for voice called Loccus.ai.
The result suggests that the audio is very likely to be a product of voice cloning.
The post appears on X as an ad for Ovisure Gold milk product, and the video links to a product promotion page, which asks users to input their personal information: name, address and mobile phone number.
Terawan is a controversial figure in Indonesia. The former health minister was kicked out of the national medical association in 2022 for “serious ethical misconduct” after introducing a “brainwash therapy” that he claimed could cure stroke patients and actively promoting his experimental, unproven COVID-19 vaccine that many medical experts say is “not a vaccine.”
However, his penchant for dubious treatments has made him a frequent target of health misinformation.
Indonesian fact-checkers have debunked deepfake videos of Terawan promoting hypertension cure, diabetes medicine and prostatitis treatment.
