A set of videos showing gunmen getting out of a vehicle and running across the campus of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Tamil Nadu as an explosive goes off are being shared on social media, where users have claimed that it shows a terror attack in the education institute.
How did we find out the truth?: We ran a search using the institute's name on Google and social media platforms.
The Google search led us to a report by The Hindu, published on 2 March, which carried a screenshot of one of the videos and stated that the National Security Guard had conducted an anti-terror mock drill on VIT's campus.
It said that around 250 personnel, from the NSG and the state police's Special Task Force (STF) had carried out a mock drill on Sunday, 2 March, as it would be less crowded, as a training exercise.
The search also led us to two YouTube shorts, which had also shared the clips saying that it showed a mock drill by the NSG.
The Tamil Nadu state government's fact-check unit also debunked the viral claim on their X account.
Conclusion: A video of a mock anti-terror drill by the NSG is being shared to falsely claim that it shows a real terror attack at VIT in Tamil Nadu.
