  • Over the past six years, social media users have resurfaced a claim that actress Julia Roberts once said: "Women, you are not rehabilitation centers for badly raised men… It is not your job to fix him, change him, parent him or raise him. You want a partner not a project." The quote in question, which is frequently (but not always) attributed to Roberts, has circulated widely across social media platforms, with many posters resharing the comment across different platforms, often attaching Roberts' name to give the quote more visibility. The claim has appeared on X as recently as September 2024, in Facebook posts, on Pinterest and on Tumblr. "Women, you are not a rehabilitation centers for badly raised men... It's not your job to fix him, change him, parent him or raise him. You want a partner, not a project!" ➳ π‘±π’–π’π’Šπ’‚ 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒔 Wonderful evening everyone πŸ’«πŸ’• pic.twitter.com/5IpaIDpdMD β€” πŸ¦‹π‘Ίπ’šπ’π’—π’Šπ’‚πŸ¦‹ (@sylvia246800) September 12, 2024 Its attribution to Roberts first started popping up around 2018, with viral memes and posts suggesting that the "Pretty Woman" actress made the statement. Six years ago, one poster to r/quotes on Reddit even attempted to get to the bottom of where the quote originated from, suggesting it didn't come from Roberts, but received zero comments on that post. One post on Instagram, shared in October 2019, unquestionably attributed the quote to the actress, receiving nearly 60,000 likes, with commenters apparently taking the attribution as a given: (powerofpositivity/Instagram) However, while this quote is frequently attributed to Roberts, thus far we've found no verified evidence she ever made such a statement. We reached out to Roberts' public relations representatives for confirmation or clarification, and will update this article if we receive a response. For now we've rated the claim unproven. Despite the quote's wide spread, a thorough review of Roberts' public statements, interviews and film scripts show no record of her saying this comment or writing it. Multiple social media posts have attributed the phrase to her without citing any credible source. Various databases of her quotes and interviews, including her IMDb profile, do not contain any instance in which this the original source was cited. To investigate further, we combed through various media archives dating back to 1987, the year Roberts launched her acting career, using resources like the Newspapers database and screenplay archives of her popular movies including "Steel Magnolias" and "Erin Brockovich." Some of the movie screenplays reviewed included: - "Sleeping With the Enemy" (1991) - "Eat, Pray, Love" (2010) - "Mystic Pizza" (1988) - "Satisfaction" (1988) - "Ben is Back" (2018) None of the movie scripts we reviewed contained the disputed quote, thus failing to yield a result. The quote, "Women, you are not rehabilitation centers for badly raised men," appears to have gained viral traction due to social media rather than originating from anything Roberts said or did. It's likely that the quote originated from anonymous social media posts, with its attribution to Roberts being a later addition. Snopes has previously fact-checked claims about Roberts, including the true claim that the hospital bill for her birth was paid by Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, and the unproven claim that a film studio executive proposed casting Roberts as former slave Harriet Tubman.
