  • Fact Check: Old video of Mahua Moitra FALSELY linked to Lok Sabha expulsion The video of Mahua Moitra being forcibly dragged by the Delhi Police dates back to October and is not related to her expulsion from the parliament. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from October 3 and shows Moitra, with several other TMC leaders being detained by the Delhi Police from the Krishi Bhawan during a sit-in protest. Months before the Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress faced a significant setback when Mahua Moitra was ousted from the Lok Sabha in a cash-for-query row. In the midst of a debate about whether the decision was right or wrong, a video of her being forcibly dragged and pulled by some police personnel is making the rounds on social media. The video shows Moitra being forcibly dragged away by police. People sharing this video on X and Facebook claimed that this is how she was expelled from the Lok Sabha. "TMC MP Mahua Moitra has been expelled from the Parliament over cash for a query case. She was expelled in this manner. Your views?" read one such post. Its archived version can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is months old and unrelated to Moitra's expulsion from the Lok Sabha. UNCOVERING THE TRUTH A search with relevant keywords led us to a YouTube video from October 4, 2023, uploaded to the Oneindia News channel. In this footage, comparable scenes unfold, portraying Mahua Moitra being lifted and forcefully moved by security personnel. This video mentioned that the incident took place in New Delhi's Krishi Bhawan, where Moitra, alongside some senior party leaders of the TMC, was detained during a sit-in protest. The protest ensued as they were denied a meeting with Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, despite having a pre-scheduled appointment. TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhle and Moitra shared these visuals on October 3. As per an October 3 report by India Today, Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the TMC, along with several others, was apprehended by the Delhi Police. According to a Deccan Herald report, this sit-in protest by the TMC was followed up by a demonstration at the Jantar Mantar with MGNREGA workers, alleging the NDA government of not paying Rs 15,000 crore in dues to the state under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the PM Awas Yojana. The BJP, however, hit back and accused the TMC of doing "drama" in Delhi to divert attention from the scams in West Bengal. Thus, it is evident that an old and unrelated video from the Krishi Bhawan in Delhi was falsely attributed to Mahua Moitra's expulsion from the parliament.
