  • Fact Check: This video does not show fake Hamas killings being staged by Israel India Today's investigation found that the video shows behind-the-scenes moments from a short film titled "Empty Place". Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video shows behind-the-scenes moments from a short film titled "Empty Place." As the conflict continues to escalate, both the Israeli defence forces and the militant group Hamas, have been accused of killing civilians — including children. A video now making the rounds purports to show how Israelis are manufacturing fake videos of Hamas killing children. The video appears to show the filming of an injured child lying on the ground using professional camera equipment. Some men in the video could be seen directing the child to alter his posture. One person present in the scene appeared to carry an automatic rifle. Sharing the video on Twitter, a person wrote, “Israeli media exposed. See how Israelis are making fake videos saying that Hamas killed children." The archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video shows behind-the-scenes moments from a short film titled “Empty Place”. Our Probe We noticed people replying to one of the viral posts on Twitter, saying that the video was from a movie shoot. One person also responded with a screenshot from the Instagram account of cinematographer Mohamad Awawdeh, who shared a different version of the video on July 1. According to Awawdeh’s post, the video was from the behind-the-scenes of a short film based on the life of Ahmad Manasra, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy, whose arrest in 2015 led to global outrage. Manasra was arrested in relation to the stabbing of two Israelis in East Jerusalem and continues to be incarcerated. A further keyword search on YouTube led us to a 2022 short film “Empty Place”. Starting at the one-minute 11-second mark in the movie, one can see the same boy and other actors at the same location seen in the viral video. A comparison between the viral video and the short film’s scene can be seen below. It’s noteworthy that in 2022 as well, the same clip went viral with similar claims. At the time, “Empty Place” director Awni Eshtaiwe confirmed to Reuters that the footage was from the filming of this short film. It is hence clear that the video in question is old and shows the shoot of a short film. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
