This incident is from Bangladesh’s Dinajpur district. The accused was arrested on March 18.
CCTV footage of a Muslim man sexually assaulting a school student has been shared widely on social media, with many claiming this incident happened in India. An X user shared the video and wrote, “A Muslim man tried to molest a school girl caught on CCTV in India”.
Another wrote, “India slowly becoming Pakistan for Hindus,” implying that the school student in the video was Hindu. The archives of these posts can be seen here and here.
India Today found that this incident happened on March 17 in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur district. Shah Iftekhar Ahmed, Dinajpur’s superintendent of police, confirmed this to India Today.
Our Probe
Responding to the viral post, many social media users pointed out that this incident was from Bangladesh. A reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes along with relevant keywords led us to a March 18 video report by Bangladeshi news outlet Jamuna TV. As per the Bangla language caption written alongside this report, this incident happened in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur.
We subsequently found several Bangladeshi news reports about the incident. According to Bangla News 24, this incident happened on March 17, when the school student was walking to her sister’s house. Following this incident, her father filed a complaint with the police.
Per a report by CNI Asia, the victim was a class 6 student. The accused reportedly was the son of Ariful Islam Mintu of the Baluadanga locality in Sakhawat, Bangladesh. His family as per the report asserted that the accused suffered from mental issues and was getting treatment for the same.
India Today then got in touch with Shah Iftekhar Ahmed, the superintendent of police in the Dinajpur district, to know more. He said that a 12-year-old Hindu girl was molested on March 17 by Sakhawat Hossain, 20. Ahmed added, “Upon receipt of a complaint from the victim’s father, a case was filed in the Kotwali police station of Dinajpur under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000. On March 18, the criminal was duly arrested and sent to prison."
Bangladesh-based reporter Shahidul Hasan Khokan also corroborated that this incident happened in Bangladesh.
Thus, it’s clear that this video is not from India.
