Ivermectin is a highly discussed drug at the moment related to Covid-19. We fact-checked and found that the claim is mostly false. The Claim “Ivermectin sterilizes 85% of the men who take it,” claims the social media users who posted the memes. Such posts can be seen here, here, here, and here. A snapshot is given below. Fact Check What is Ivermectin? Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic drug used to treat worms and infections caused by worms. It is veterinary medicine, used to treat worm infections in horses but is also approved by the USFDA for the treatment of certain parasitic infections in humans. Does Ivermectin cause sterility in men? No conclusive evidence is available for the same. The first study we could trace on this dates back to 1991 where Ivermectin was tested on cattle. The study showed no effect on reproductive rates. Another study done on mice in 2008 had shown a slight reduction in fertility. There was a small study done on humans in 2011. The study enlisted 385 people as subjects but finally could only be done on 37 people. The study noted that there is a decrease in sperm motility (the ability of the sperm to move) for patients treated with Ivermectin. The researchers advised caution in using Ivermectin to treat certain diseases but there was no mention of 85% of the subjects being affected. However, the research has been disregarded by most experts since the 37 is a very low count of sample size. Moreover, the research was published in a lesser-known scientific journal (Archives of Applied Science Research) and was not followed up with any further research.
