Verdict: False Check Your Fact didn’t find any record of Pelosi or Schumer tweeting these statements. The tweets appear to have been fabricated. Fact Check: Social media users have been sharing an image that purportedly shows screen grabs of Pelosi and Schumer tweeting about coins honoring Trump. (RELATED: Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tweet That Someone Stole Her Shoes From Her Office During The Capitol Riot?) “How can someone buy a coin in honor of a man that ruined our democracy?” Schumer allegedly tweeted Feb. 17, while Pelosi supposedly said on Twitter March 15, “I’m calling for a complete ban on all sales of Trump’s presidential coin! Who is with me?” There is, however, no record of the Democratic politicians sending these tweets. An advanced search of Pelosi and Schumer’s verified Twitter accounts did not yield any results of the comments attributed to them in the image. ProPublica’s archive of deleted tweets from elected officials also shows no evidence of Pelosi and Schumer deleting them. Such tweets would likely prompt media coverage, yet no news reporting about the supposed tweets from Pelosi and Schumer could be found. The tweets seem to have been fabricated. While coins commemorating Trump are available online, the U.S. Mint has not issued an official presidential $1 coin for him. The most recent president the U.S. Mint issued a presidential $1 coin for was the late President George H.W. Bush. The U.S. Mint did create a bronze medal commemorating Trump’s term as president that can be found on its website. The internet is replete with fake tweets created to look like they came from the verified Twitter accounts of politicians. The fabricated tweets from Pelosi and Schumer were also shared on Telegram channels, including one with over 58,000 subscribers.
