  • Fact Check: This video DOESN'T show man falling into Kashmir waterfall, it's from Karnataka While a man in J&K indeed lost his life after falling into Aharbal waterfall, this video showed a different person who slipped into Karnataka's Arasinagundi Falls. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While a man indeed died after falling into the Aharbal waterfall in Kashmir, the video in question shows a man falling into Karnataka’s Arasinagundi waterfall. A video making the rounds on social media captured a tragic moment when a man standing on a rock overlooking a massive waterfall slipped, fell into the waters, and disappeared. Those sharing the video on social media platforms claimed that this man fell into the Aharbal waterfall. Aharbal is a hill station in the southwestern part of Kashmir Valley. The text in the viral video read: “Aharbal waterfall. Tariq from Shopian Nanehaal.” An archived version of this post can be found here. India Today found that this video showed a man falling into Karnataka’s Arasinagundi waterfall, and not a fall in Kashmir. Our Probe With the help of a keyword search, we found several media reports carrying screenshots of the video in question. Per an NDTV report, this incident took place on July 23, when a man slipped and fell into the Arasinagundi waterfalls located around 6 km away from Kollur village in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Sharath Kumar, was from Bhadravathi in the Shivamogga district. He was reportedly filming an Instagram Reel when he lost his balance and fell into the waterfall. The whole incident was captured by his friend who was shooting the video. Times of India reported that diving expert and the police have been carrying out rescue operations. A missing complaint has also been registered at the Kollur Police Station. Tweeting the video of the incident on July 24, the Press Trust of India stated that the man died. His body, however, had not been recovered at the time of writing this report. It is worth noting that a 22-year-old named Tariq Ahmad Sheikh reportedly fell into the Aharbal waterfall in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on July 24. The youth, a resident of the Manihal village of Shopian, reportedly ran a shop in the south Kashmir district. Sheikh’s body was found the next day by a rescue team in the vicinity of the waterfall. Many local media outlets based in Jammu and Kashmir shared videos of his last rites on July 25. The video in question, however, has no links to this incident.
