India Today Fact Check found that the viral video is actually from the 2020 Mumbai floods. Our Probe Upon reverse-searching the keyframes of the viral video, we came across several social media posts from August 2020 containing the same video. One post noted that the viral video was shot in the CP Tank area in Gulawadi Circle in Mumbai. Further, we found a report by the International Business Times, dated August 6, 2020, which included a screenshot of the viral video. The report highlighted that after heavy rains and stormy weather, hundreds of vehicles were submerged in the flooded streets of the city. At that time, Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi was ruling the state. Many parts of South Mumbai, including Churchgate, Colaba, Marine Lines, Marine Drive, Kalbadevi, Dongri, Mohammed Ali Road, Byculla, Mazagaon, Grant Road, and Charni Road, experienced floods at the time. The city also witnessed gusty winds of up to 70 kmph, resulting in the uprooting of over a hundred trees and blocking many roads in South Mumbai. A report in Mint from August 6, 2020, noted that the city experienced the heaviest one-day rain in August in 47 years at the time. The Colaba weather station recorded 29.4 centimetres of rainfall in 12 hours, the highest downpour for a single day in August since at least 1974. We also geolocated the exact location of the viral video and confirmed that it was shot on Cawasji Patel Tank Road in Mumbai. Thus, it’s clear that an old video of the 2020 Mumbai floods is being shared as recent. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
