Viral video is from June 4, 2024, when Hooda got emotional after he won the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat.
The ruling BJP defied anti-incumbency in Haryana and secured a historic third term by winning 48 out of the total 90 Assembly seats, while the Congress lost yet another chance to come to the power. It could get only 37 seats.
Amid the party's morale-crushing defeat, a video of Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who is the son of former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, wiping off his tears went viral on social media. Those sharing it claimed that Hooda broke down after the party’s dismal show in Haryana.
Sharing this video an X, a user wrote, “This man did padayatra across Haryana, addressed 100+ rallies, remained active on the ground. Feeling sad for Deepender Hooda, his efforts deserved a better ending. We are with you.” Its archive can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that this video is from 4 June 2024, when Hooda cried out of joy after winning the Rohtak Loksabha seat.
Our Probe
Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to its longer version ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj_Kq76DxL8 ) shared by a YouTube channel back in June 2024. The video description noted that Hooda got emotional after winning the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat by three lakh votes.
Further searches led us to a media report about this video dated June 5, 2024. According to it, Deepender Singh Hooda won the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat by more than three lakh votes. Following the victory, a huge crowd of party workers gathered at his house for celebration, making the Congress leader emotional.
On June 4, 2024, news agency ANI also shared a video on X, featuring Hooda thanking the party workers and celebrating his victory at his home, while supporters chanted in his support.
Deepender Hooda contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Rohtak and defeated BJP’s Arvind Kumar Sharma by more than three lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Hooda had contested from the same seat, but lost by a slim margin of seven thousand votes.
Thus, an old video of Hooda getting emotional after his Lok Sabha victory was falsely linked to the party’s defeat in the Haryana Assembly elections.
